St Valentine's Day

I began  the day receiving a few electronic messages for this special day. I discovered Marvin had forgotten so told him he would be in the dog house ! Fun translating that but he got the message.

Allan collected me and we first visited Jose's family, where I have them their monthly food payment. As usual there was lots of fun and laughter. Whilst I was there the local health officials came. They were checking for rubbish and the water supplies, something to do with mosquitoe prevention.

Next we went to Marvin's, where we collected four bags of food and another bag with some soap and detergent. We went off to visit four families and deliver the food around Urbaite. We told them it was a St Valentine's present. They smiled and said thank you, but I felt there was a mixture of gratitude and embarrassment in their eyes.  We did not give to all we had visited the previous time, in one family the parent had found work as a teacher and another had received help from her family in Costa Rica.

This daughter of one family was playing with a tyre and a stick like the boys we had seen previously.

We then visited the secondary school with a box of pens for the pupils. And later returned to sort the clothing that had arrived in the boxes. There were various sizes, so we ended up with a bag of completely new clothes and bags of used shirts for all age groups. Hemer the headteacher will get the staff to identify needy causes, but whilst we were sorting one curious little chap came in wearing a shirt miles too big. We kitted him out straight away. He has significant learning difficulties, but went off with a spring in his step.

There are two boxes of jumpers but they will be useful when the winter comes.  In May til November.

We had a look at the school where we saw that the teachers had already used the new materials to make lovely displays.

It is very satisfying to know that we have met a need.

An encouraging message from Jose tonight:

You should rest and feel proud of all the hard work under the strong sun working.  You're braver than I ever imagined.
