Work continues in Ometepe April til July 2021 Many achievements despite another difficult year!

During these months we have continued to support several schools on Ometepe, whilst also continuing with payment of the monthly allowance for internet and sundries to Rafaela Herrera. It was very important to me tio address the sanitary facilities ibn all the schools where we identified deficiencies.  We still have more to do. El Corozal needs new doors on their latrines and we need to review the handwashing facilities in all schools.  I am also aware that we have done nothing for Santa Teresa and Los Ramos recently.
Many items have been packed for sending to all of our schools on Ometepe via Peace and Hope but Nicaraguan government restrictions are delaying transportation.

The grand opening of the staging area at El Corozal on 2nd July.  This is a remote and rural community which is very poor;  for some time they had dreamed of a staging area for their cultural events and parental meetings.  Marvin is cutting the ribbon, before the stage is put to use with many messages of thanks from pupils, staff and the community and celebratory dancing.

Marvin arranged delivery of the materials, to El Corozal, giving income to local suppliers, plus he identified  the workers who came from the community.  He cycled many miles each day to supervise the work, and on one occasion got caught in heavy monsoon type rains.  Then he had to take time off to recover from flu symptoms.  His commitment to the project is so appreciated,

During May the doors on the latrines at Tilgue were replaced.  Local people give us a local price, not the usual prices that are charged to foreigners.
During May we also supported the repair of the children's playthings at Tilgue so they were safe and usable.  Such a small things which means so much.

This partition between two classrooms was in need of repairs and new wheels.  It was unsafe and in danger of falling onto pupils.  Another achievement during May.

At the end of April the new latrines at Las Pilas were completed.  These were to replace the dreadful facilities I had seen last year when I visited.  Everyone was thrilled and a celebration of thanks took place.  So here we can see the before and after, what a difference!

The children hold up messages of thanks.

Sparkling new latrines.
