To donate  The Forgotten Children of the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes

On Thursday  we visited Santa Teresa to deliver the rest of the notebooks. The children ran up to greet me like a long lost friend.


We then spent a while discussing the office space and taking measurements. Yasmina will look for a quote from someone in the local community and Jose will approach his friend we met the other day to make a table. So all will provide further work for the community.  The rest of the day was spent at Finca Maria, relaxing and enjoying fresh roasted and ground coffee. 

On Friday I went to the school to see the work that had been done to mend the audio systems. $69 seemed a very realistic price given that several parts had been needed. All the equipment looked new after the work. I am impressed by the approach of the new Headteacher.

After paying the bill, we found Ronnie who had told me he couldn't go to school for lack of uniform. Both his siblings had been chosen but not him. He was playing barefoot in the street, looking in need of a bit of help. So we took him to the shop and bought a polo shirt and trousers for him. His father didn't know the size; Jose said that if their clothes are always second-hand, the parents often have no idea of the size.  Now he can go to school on  Monday!


Jose sent me a lovely message later saying not even the church had taken a child by the hand and gone to buy them uniform. Well that doesn't surprise me. Something takes  over when I'm here, I am filled with compassion. I'll probably return home with little in the bank account but at least I know there's more coming in, unlike these people.



Jose is now waiting at the port for the delivery of the speaker, for Santa Teresa,  from the mainland which was later delivered to Marvin's house

 And so the Ometepe project continues after eight year.  I had many interesting experiences visiting until the pandemic.  Many things have changed here but even more in Ometepe.  The Nicaraguan government have chosen their political allies which means that many NGOs and charitable groups no longer operate there.  The Peace and Hope Trust has contacts from SIFT who have a presence and they also have individuals who go to visit and do some work there, but this is on a lower scale than before. Our project continues because of our direct contact with local people, who are prepared to work on our behalf. There had to be a change of personnel organising the sourcing of goods and distributing it.  This rose after some problems in our contact's family.  The son Jordy has left home to live in Managua with his girlfriend and now has a good job, which is great after we supported him through university.  Jordy's father Marvin seems to be little evident in the...

Final farewells

The end of the week has included two more school farewells, one at El Corozal and one at Las Pilas. And today I move on to another hotel, so the hotel owner is picking me up and taking me to Marvin's house. Patrick is coming too as he's doing some plumbing work.  Yesterday he went to the builders' merchant to buy the parts, with a lift from Carlos, who works here. I had a quiet morning having a drink with Jose and his friend in a little ranchita near the university. His friend is also a recovering alcoholic and has been sobre for 18 months during which time he has set up this little business selling fruit drinks and bottled drinks to the university students. He has constructed much of it himself in wood and it is very good. I keep my fingers crossed for these young men who have lost their way. Another good day's work.

On Wednesday we collected all the boxes from Marvin's house and took them to Santa Teresa. There were a few hiccups with the timings, but eventually everyone was gathered and the boxes, with Jordy accompanying us and Fanor once more our driver. We arrived at Santa Teresa and were warmly greeted. The equipment was delivered, staff were gathered and more speeches given. Jose was really good, talking a lot about caring for the equipment and the cost of maintenance.  The headteacher said this had been her dream and now it had come true. The speaker will be used for their cultural activities and the computer for making teachers' work easier, for preparing lessons and to access information for pupils. We purchased a Bluetooth device that enables them to connect to their mobile phone, as we cannot commit to installing Wi-Fi.
